Nifty Weekly Expiry March 12: Why Crude Oil’s 10% Crash is a Game Changer

The "Trump Bounce": Gift Nifty Rockets 400 Points as War Fears Ease

What a difference 24 hours makes! Yesterday, we were staring at $117 oil and a 2.5% market crash. Today, the sentiment has done a complete 180-degree turn. Following President Trump’s comments that military operations in Iran could end “very soon,” global markets have breathed a massive sigh of relief.

1. The "Very Soon" Catalyst

During a press conference at Doral National, President Trump described the conflict as a "short-term excursion" rather than a prolonged war. He noted that the US is "very far ahead" of its 4–5 week timeframe, suggesting that the primary military objectives—neutralizing naval and drone capabilities—are mostly complete.

The Market Reaction:

  • Gift Nifty: Surged over 400 points, signaling a massive gap-up for the Indian opening.

  • US Markets: Closed in the green, with futures maintaining a bullish "continuation" pattern.

  • Crude Oil: Crashed by nearly 10%, sliding back toward the $90-$95 range after hitting $120.

2. Is the Nifty Bottom In?

Yesterday’s low of 23,776 is now looking like a significant "structural bottom." In technical terms, we saw a classic "exhaustion gap" followed by a sharp recovery.

  • Support: The 23,800–24,000 zone has held firmly on a closing basis.

  • Resistance: We are now heading straight for the 24,500 – 24,700 hurdle.

3. Weekly Expiry Special: The Short Covering Rally

Today is Weekly Expiry (March 12), and the setup is perfect for a "Short Squeeze."

  1. Bear Trap: Many traders went short yesterday expecting oil to hit $150.

  2. The Squeeze: As Gift Nifty opens 400 points higher, those shorts will be forced to cover, adding fuel to the upward fire.

  3. The Pivot: Watch the 24,350 level. If Nifty stays above this in the first hour, we could see an afternoon rally toward 24,800.

4. Why Crude’s 10% Fall is the Real Hero

For India, $117 oil was a nightmare for inflation and the Rupee. The drop back to double digits means:

  • Lower Input Costs: Paint, Tire, and Specialty Chemical stocks will lead the rebound.

  • Bank Nifty Recovery: With inflation fears cooling, banking heavyweights like HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank are expected to recoup yesterday’s losses quickly.

The Apollo Alpha Take: Yesterday was the day to "Buy the Fear." Today is the day to "Watch the Expiry." While the geopolitical risk hasn't vanished, the "Worst Case Scenario" (a 6-month war) has been taken off the table by the US administration.

Conclusion

The market rewards those who keep a cool head when the headlines are screaming. By betting on India's long-term growth even during the "Black Monday" dip, investors are now positioned for a massive expiry-day recovery.
